If Only :(
And then there was this man, an American who sat right next to me on a nearby bench... I didn't give him a second glance.. I disregarded him as just another person in the stream of strangers I see everyday... Not until he asked if he could find a pay phone, not to me... to the crowd in general... I looked up then and replied "I don't know"... I really didn't... Then I heard somebody say "down the stairs, on the opposite side" or something like that.... Thinking that he might miss his train, he again asked everyone there in general whether he could use any of ours phone and that he'd pay us... nobody looked up this time... my first instinct was to take out my mobile and help him out but then for some reason I kept quiet, staring into my book, reading nothing in particular... Everybody else also reacted in the same way... as if that man was invisible... as if we hadn't heard anything at all... he looked around hopefully to see if anybody was willing to let him use their phone... but nothing... SILENCE... all this happened very quickly... but those couple of minutes became excruciating for me... the longer I kept quiet, the harder it became for me to say anything to him, to help him; it seemed as if I had frozen... And then out of nowhere a black woman came and he asked her directly for the favor and she gave him her mobile, he made a quick call, apparently to his wife and then returned it with many thanks to that lady...
If only...
If only I had not feared what would happen if the man turns out to be a rogue and does not return my handset or worse runs away with it.. If only I had not thought about what others sitting there would think if he indeed would have run away with it; what kind of a stupid girl is she giving out her things to strangers like that, that too in a foreign land.. If only I had the strength to help out that man, those genuine words of gratitude would have been for me...
And then I thought about the other people sitting there.. Is this weighing upon their conscience as much as it is on mine... would they be thinking about him as well, I guess not... But does just thinking about it later on make me a better person, I think not :(
I pray to God to give me the strength to be more human if I face such a situation ever again, even if I lose some of my possessions, atleast I won't have to spend unsettling nights thinking about what I could have done and what I did not !!

Culture Contrast !!
What really caught my attention though was when she spoke on the topic of living with one's parents ... "while in India, its not something to even think about or consider, in the West however your parents would kick you out of the house after a certain age if you don't go by yourself... in India it signifies the family bonding and intimacy while in the West it epitomizes the inherent sense of independence ingrained in the people".... the cultural divide was so vividly apparent... I couldn't help but think of the charm both ways of being hold; in their own manner they are important to the people who follow them, people who are subtly but undoubtedly impacted by these ways of life... none is bad, I must say.. no culture should ever be termed as bad, especially just because we might not be a part of it.... In the end, we should be looking for a favorable fusion of entities, the best of all the worlds and create something worthwhile... right !!

The Pursuit of Happyness
All the other things and feelings are just pawns in this larger game, it might be possible for a variety of us to reach that finishing line in different ways... one might think that adventure makes him happy, some other would need flashy clothes and jewellery to make him feel the same way... Bottom line is... whatever it is that makes you happy... go get it and get it by yourself... achieve your inner contentment first so that you can multiply it manifolds and give it back to the world around you!!

Walk that Walk !!!
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.
- Robert Frost
So many times, we feel like we are standing on a dead end, like there is no way ahead... no way out... it seems as if we alone are facing all the despair in the world... as if we would do better in anybody else's life except ours... all the while forgetting that we alone are responsible for what we are and what we can be... I know this is true for everybody who reads this...
Every other day we think about what all we have to do or what all we want to do, mentally charting out rigorous time tables and jam packed schedules but somehow we end up doing nothing... nothing at all.... the day just drags by with no end result !! What happens to us when we actually need to execute what we have planned, why don't we open our eyes at eight instead of mid-day, why don't we stop the endless episodes of f.r.i.e.n.d.s. (I seriously need to work on this one ;))... what happens to us when it really is the question of 'walk that walk' !!
Talk that talk but also walk that walk... otherwise the talk is pointless... It does not have to be long strides, baby steps also count... the idea is to get moving.. may be slowly but atleast steadily towards your goal... It will come in the end, it has to... and when it does you will cherish your belief in yourself....

Phantom Limbs...
The book introduced me to a strange new concept of "Phantom Limbs", the take was supernatural but when I scrouged Wiki and the likes, I found it very much exists. Just something interesting I found to share with you, so here it goes....
"A phantom limb is the sensation that an amputated or missing limb (even an organ, like the appendix) is still attached to the body and is moving appropriately with other body parts. The missing limb often feels shorter and may feel as if it is in a distorted and painful position. Although not all phantom limbs are painful, patients will sometimes feel as if they are gesturing, feel itches, twitch, or even try to pick things up. "
Now, until recently, the dominant theory for cause of phantom limbs was irritation in the severed nerve endings (called "neuromas"). When a limb is amputated, many severed nerve endings are terminated at the remaining stump. These nerve endings can become inflamed, and were thought to send anomalous signals to the brain. These signals, being functionally nonsense, were thought to be interpreted by the brain as pain. Drugs, anti-depressants, Spinal Cord Stimulation (effective) are said to be some of the ways that are known to curb it, though people have gone to the extremes of getting a second amputation done.
Should I call it weird or supernatural or something which is just unexplored by science yet... I don't know, but it certainly is something to think about... what say !!!

Relief !!!
Relief when we feel the cool air of our homes along with the soft ticking of the ceiling fan after we have escaped from the scorching sun.... relief when we finally get our exam results after the excruciatingly long wait and find out that we didn't do that badly after all.... relief when we ultimately make it for an interview after a particularly late morning and series of traffic jams.... whooffff !!!
Relief as a feeling is so very under-rated... you may feel sad or happy, angry or mischievous, frightened or embarassed... but people seldom say "I am relieved".... we might be using some manifestations of the word though, I cannot seem to think of any at the moment :)
What is relief by the way.... the feeling of the unbearable knot in your stomach dissolving instantly or your taut facial expressions loosening almost like at will or you not feeling like all arms and legs.... May be relief is the feeling of knowing that everyone around you is safe and sound.... that you are together to face any uncertainities of life...

???
I just read this phrase in a book; didn't want it to be one of the so many thought provoking phrases I come across everyday and let go the next day...
Absence of memory.. what it would be like... being like a baby maybe; back to square one.
I often wonder what do babies think all the time, how they think more specifically.... they don't have any names to map to the people or the the things around them... their mind would be like a huge blank canvas... their eyes and ears taking everything in, their brains filled with so much information that it must feel like the buzzing of a thousand bees.... Surely, they'd be much more open to the details the world offers them than adults who discard the same as daily monotonocity of life !!!
When I began writing this post, I didn't have any title for it... and now it seems that the three consecutive question marks I placed at the top best describe the randomness I feel at the moment... :)

I miss lucky !!!
I MISS HER !!
Yes... I miss my darling ''lucky'', the female dog we have at my cousin's place; well considering its just a stones throw away from mine, she has been as good as my canine. I love the way she pounces on our quilts every cold morning to push us out of the beds or simply to make room for herselves... I love the way she runs to the door each time somebody so much as whispers at the entrance... I love the way she never barks at strangers.. just us who take her for a walk everyday... I love the way she seeks us, scared as a baby when children are bursting crackers on Diwali nights... I love the way she follows us around the house like a maniac if she thinks we might be going somewhere... I love the way she always wants to eat whats on our plates... I love the way she lazily opens her eyes just to make sure we are around and goes back to her cuddly sleep again...
Oh... I miss her soo much... Wish I had her with me here !!!

Everybody Thinks....
But then my thought wandered off to somebody with an entirely different perspective on the same subject... someone who asks me how is she supposed to know when to do a "-1" on both sides of an equation, someone for whom the Binomial theorem holds no more meaning than a bunch of C's strewn together with some random numbers, someone who hasn't quite caught hold of how to take an LCM to this day... And then I remembered with a smile on my face the brilliant solution she had to a simple problem..
Area of the Triangle: 1/2 (AB)(BC) = 1/2 A(2B)C = ABC ;)
It was not until recently that I came to acknowledge the fact that her mind would have been so clear when she thought of this.. so devoid of any other mathematical mesh (the formulas and the equations which cloud my mind all the time) that she was able to think of this.... Honestly, I could have never pulled this one off... So, I came to the conclusion that she did apply her mind after all... so what if it implied something absurd.... Maybe some day she'll come up with a masterpiece.... I'm keeping my fingers crossed.. :)
Save the Grammar !!
I wince every time I hear a 'did' or a 'did not' with some past tense verb... it aches my heart that 9 out of 10 people use it so confidently, so unflinchingly that it almost seems right... this is just one of the grammatical disasters that has entered into the casual way of things... youngsters picking it up from their friends who in turn might've picked it up from somebody else... this and the 'THE' ghost never seem to leave me alone... why do some people have the habbit of using it alternatively as if their fluency depends on this one word... or as if it is the only word they find worth using... I sometimes want to scream out aloud and tell them to get it right but then that ways I'd have nothing else to do but shout...
Oh, c'mon.. I am not being arrogant about what I know... it is just that I am sad at the level of ignorance people have embraced and the irony is they don't even realize it...
READ... this is all I plead to people... it could be anything... from a novel you like to your young sibling's fresh course books to a roadside banner or the sub-title of a TV commercial... It helps... TRUST ME !!!
Sunday Treats :)
the first two episodes were about "how ganga marries shantanu and kills his seven sons to free them of the curse Brahma had given them"... it was all very mystic... though the photography was poor, it had a familiar feeling.... it reminded me of our mowgli days... how we used to get up early on Sunday mornings, freshen up and sit in front of the television sets to watch our favorite programs back to back... the jungle book... ramayana... chandrakanta (God, I forgot it completely)... captain vyom (can't believe we used to watch that)... And while we sat glued to the idiot box, my mother used to cook delicious aloo paranthas or macroni or the ohh-so-yummy bread omelette for us.... I reminisce and I am filled with nostalgia... there is something about old days always.... which makes them good old days :)

Small pleasures of Life !!!
And it kind of stuck, no reason... some things just remain with you... apart from the lessons that life teaches you unwittingly, there are some which you imbibe willingly.... this one belonged to the latter category :)
How many times do we think about watching a movie with our families, all cousins huddled in one quilt (just like old times !!) rather than hopping over to the monotonous PVRs sprangled across the city? How many times do we think of going with our mothers to get the day's supply of vegetables and milk or to help her with some chore rather than thinking of buying her a car or getting her a maid? Don't you find the smell of hot home-made "pakoras" on a rainy day much more appealing than the best Italian pizza treat...
When did the transformation happen... we won't know... we have been too busy with ourselves to realize that... schooling.. graduation.. post grad.. jobs.. marriage.. kids.. their schooling... huufff !!! Its a vicious circle, howsoever fast you may run, you will never find an end to it and subsequently you will never find peace or contentment.... We need to understand that life is not about running, its about breaking the pace once in a while to appreciate the small pleasures of life... the odd sunrise from your balcony... the first shower of the season... the sound of your mother already bathed and cooking as you struggle to open your eyes in the morning... the buzz created when your father gets back home everyday...
Take care of the small things in life...
The big things will fall into place !!!

Its our life.. not yours !!
"Why is it that women need to fight and earn their place as an equal, prove that they deserve to get even the basic fundamental rights which their male counterparts get without a flicker... doesn't our being human by default gives those rights to us"....
I might be thinking too hard, but it most certainly baffles me that almost no one around me thinks like this.. and I am not just talking about men....
I feel agitated at the mere thought that men actually think that they can rule our lives... they think they are broad minded enough not to demand dowry from the girl... (yes.. thats how they try to get away) but they don't realize that by demanding from her to stay at home, even expecting something like this from her; they aren't particularly away from it... they are taking the dowry of what she could have been.. what she could have acheived... And all this is in the name of culture (dont even get me started on why all the culture is for girls only...), my point is, aren't cultures meant to evolve... Hasn't our own culture been a part of that evolution due to which we are here at this point in this era...
Why is education considered to be important only as a survival kit for girls... why it can't be the path to a higher purpose in life... just like guyzz, we are entitled to that too !!!
But hey, we are not trying to stomp you guyz down... we just don't want to ask what is rightfully ours in the first place.. we should just get it... the default system which works for you applies here too.... After all we are equals!!!
I think I saw some light !!
I thought there was no scope... even though it wasn't exactly dark but the eternal dawn itself was becoming unbearable... the wishful thinking that the first morning light will soon be touching the horizon was unsurreptitiously spreading its roots within me... but nothing was happening, I was begining to loose faith... and just when I thought that I was hoping against hope it happened... it felt like its God's way of telling you that you can't arrange the pieces of the puzzle all by yourself... u see he's the one who is leading the game, not you!!! And when he ultimately decides to solve the zig-saw, he does it better than your imagination, better than what you could have asked for....

I know its coming late... But Happy Independence Day :)
I might be overtly sentimental about this, but I am entirely and absolutely in love with my country... I love everything about it right from the busy marketplaces to the narrow streets to the people-might-call-it unhygenic chat-papdi.... I find it endearing that inspite of everything that we have gone through, we still manage to smile, start afresh and strike hard at our goals...
I am blessed to be born in a country like ours... I know its cliche.... but its very much true.... I got everything here... everything I could have asked for...
I know there are problem areas we need to work upon... but I think the youth of this nation has understood this and is very well aware of the implications of leaving these concerns unattended...
I have faith that this realization above all is of utmost significance at this point of time and together we shall eliminate these problems.... We are on the path to glory... no one can stop that... the only question was to realize it...
Here we come !!!

The Niagra Falls !!!
'It was beautiful' might be an understatement, the light green hue makes you wonder if God has himself colored it that ways... 'it was exhilarating' might not completely define what I felt at that moment... I remember the particular instant when I could see the mighty water crashing on the rocks around me while I was holding the raincoat tightly around my ears and all I could hear was dead silence, not believing that there were around 50 people with me on the cruise... And then I let go... the mist falling on my face, I took in the thundering serenity keeping my eyes open all the while not to miss even a single second of the breathtaking opportunity...
It was as close as we could get.... scary and overwhelming at the same time... You have to see it to believe it.... the splashing water threatening to crash beyond its limits every instant and even though man, as stubborn as he is, has found a way to topple away nature's barriers and found a way into the very heart of it, you couldn't help but marvel in nature's audacity, stamping its presence, letting you know that it still rules, despite of everything ...

$@Ch Ka $@Mn@ !!!
Well it has to be... what with the huge drama already surrounding it for no reason at all !!
The day before, I saw a heated discussion on Star News between Rajeev Khandelwaal (the show's celebrity host... he does a commendable job by the way), some MP (who looked like he had nothing else to do), Smriti Irani (aka the overrated Tulsi) and another lady (looked like the modern, independent and confident woman); all debating over whether the serial should be banned or not... there were talks about ethics and clean prime time viewing and the serial polluting young minds... Smriti went on and on about the content of the serial... poor Rajeev had little time to put across his point (I liked his counter statement that the K serials were no less with their backward portrayals of 4Xmarriages, concepts like mangliks n that we should be probably thinking about their adverse impact). The elegant lady also made a good point by saying that today's world is all about exhibitionism and its high time we stop the moral policing, she was taking the show as a mere entertainment mode.. no truth n lie strings attached...
I say, don't we have better, more life impacting issues that we can discuss about and help solve...
Why does everybody have to react so vigorously for such trivial occurrences, why does everybody hear a pin drop almost everytime when thunderstorms pass by unnoticed... There is female foeticide.. there is widow remarriage.. there is child labour... literacy problems... caste issues.... especially for India, the list is endless.... and still people find the time to babble on these non-issues.... Seriously, when are we going to get some perspective....
BIG PICTURE PLEASSEEEE !!!

I HATE MEETINGS !!!
The worst part is that in between all this , no work is getting done.... by the time I am able to concentrate on an issue (i.e. after attending long draining meetings), its time again for some other stupid meeting.... I feel like everything is closing in on me... feel like I want a breath of fresh air... clean of meetings so that I can do my work... something real.... something which they say the meeting are being held for....
Hey.. I have no grudge against them... let the management have them... let me be free till I can... I will anyday prefer a day full of work than one clogged by meetings :P

H@rRy pOttEr & the HaLf bLoOd Pr!NcE
It was awesome.... it is always endearing to see harry, ron and hermoine venturing into unseen avenues each year..... I just love watching the events unfold on the big screen even though I know everything by heart... every character, each dialogue, all the expressions....
Rupert Grint aka Ron is a sweetheart, with every part he is becoming all the more handsome and adorable... I am heads over heels in love with him..... just wondering why he has so less screenspace in all the movies... or may be I just can't have enough of him....
About the movie, sure there were some discrepancies.. or to put it in a better way, deviations from the book.... loads of scenes cut short and manipulated... I even spotted an extra one (wasn't there in the book), but to be fair it was necessary... how else can you imagine to squeeze a 600 page book into a tiny space of two and a half hours....
I want to read :)
though I must admit that I read a good part of it in a day itself.... made me think if it was just the question of getting my hands on the book....
It was always like something was holding me back.... I was always doing something or the other and when I was doing nothing getting bored, I simply just didn't remember that I had this leisurely option to pass time... So.. with this blog, I am putting this in writing (so that it registers in a better way, more of a bond u'd think) that I'll make sure that I get through atleast two books in a month, else its a waste really.. what say !!!

Its 9 in the morning... unusually I feel wide awake !!
it has quietly slipped into my routine actually... sleeping through the day... setting up my laptop in a way so my colleagues would think I am deeply engrossed in reading some very important document and merrily dozing for hours at a stretch.......
But yesterday, somehow I slept early, got a good 8 hour sleep and now here I am... perfectly awake and raring to go.... a nice sleep can do wonders really....

Seems like a dream....
I fixed my gaze on a long distant star with a faint glow... it sometimes looked like it was not there at all and forced me to imagine that I might be reflecting on my tears may be... sparkling through my eyes and making me hallucinate of a far away star.....
It was then that I decided that this needs to go into my blog.... so here it is ....

$hEeR bL!$$ !!!
But frankly speaking, it all lost its shine in the pale yellow glow of the moon... standing at the sea shore, all I could think of was that nothing can match this graceful, isolated beauty..... every ounce of the sea bathed in the silent shimmer, so exquisite, so unaware of its own splendor.........
I could have stood there for hours, ages maybe.... who can tell !!
And it all made me think that ultimately its the natural, spontaneous beauty that has the ability to touch your heart and I am not just talking about the moon or the sea here :)

Chor bazaari :)
I saw a mail today in my HCL inbox, the offshore team is having a movie party tomorrow "kambakht ishq"... I hate to be sitting here in my dull grey cubicle where it feels like I am the only one in the office... hope to get back and join the party soon :)
I have been around just about 2 months and already get a craving for my ODC's familiar faces every now and then... smiling and shining all around me.... really miss them....
I think I started with chor bazaari.... great song.. do hear it :)

Still doesn't feel like it.....
There is a lot of greenery around, lanes filed by trees on both sides..... the houses are all beautiful... wooden and with thatched roofs.... just like you see in movies..... and everythying is damn quiet..... you don't see people on the roads... just cars.......... kind of a village........
My first day at work was just OK.... nothing major happened.... the only important thing was that we got our icards..... lets c how dis goes..... will keep you posted

My emotions have cancelled each other out!!!
and yet I have this immense turmoil within me..... happiness and excitement at one moment..... nervousness and fear at the other.... deep sadness at another..... I didn't know I was capable of experiencing all of them at once..... I am not sure my brain (or my heart.. I don't know) have ever comprehended such tide of emotions together.....

Cooler than a tattoo !!!
Its actually true... you really do get a sense of purpose... you really do believe that your one vote is going to make all the difference in the world... you really do feel like being part of something worthwhile when you see a trickle pouring out of the polling booths even at the early hour....
But most of all its when you get marked by the poll-ink dot.... I mean its seriously cool.... a sure symbol that you have been a responsible citizen and all..... better than a stupid tattoo anyday.....

M@Mt@ !!!!
kid as in she is 18 already but will always be a kid types.......
The last two months of her life have been as unproductive as any...... she has been sitting and eating and watching television endlessly.... dad says she has broken our sofa..... lol.... She has just wrapped up her 12 class board exams.... and the "sword of results" is looming dangerously close.... even we can feel the ocassional shiver.....
But she has found ways to keep busy.... has joined the Shaimak Davar summer workshop.... ironically its finalle programme might be on the same day as her result.... I know she is scared to death... more than she is letting on ... But I also know that she'll do well....
Most typically.... dad has started getting all the courses forms under the sun.... I remember when he did it for me
, I had an ecomonics honours... and a psychology honours too..... God knows what mamta will get....
Here's hoping the very best in her life.....
And promising many more blog entries to her name :)
A@Rt!
Well... that's pretty much she does.... deck up and pose for the camera.... its in our genes actually... God was kind enough to spare me however....... no seriously, you guys dont understand..... she will be sprawled across the bed studying one moment as lazy as one can imagine..... the very next she'll give you a Miss World smile if the flashlight falls on her face for so much as a second... all laziness forgotten.... she'll even get up and stand next to every breathing creature in the room for a duet pose...... this holds true for the three beautiful fishes we had till last year [they died unfortunately :( ]......
Hmmmm... she has her Chinese finals coming up..... has taken a 2 week leave from her job for that.... but I don't find her schedule any different..... she'll always find time for all the scraps and replies on orkut, the frequent profile pic and album uploads notwithstanding.... I think she has to take time off internet and friends to fit everything else in between..... sometimes I am actually unsure about what she wants from her life...
All I can say is... Best of luck sis !!!
F.R.I.E.N.D.S.

As I said.. I really don't know why I started this...m kinda bored... had an awful day at work today... may be that's why.... or may be because this morning I saw my friend Aarti's first blog... herds menatality maybe.... lol....
Whatever it may be... point is I do think this can be something long lasting.... atleast thats what my intuition says....I have even planned to post one entry everyday from today.... it can be just this moment... hailstorm today... drizzle tomorrow.... but its worth a shot.....
P.S. The pic above has nothing to do with this blog.... and so does my profile name... but m a huge fan of the sitcom f.r.i.e.n.d.s. so its got to be here :)
